The Great Impression

We're experiencing an electrical storm and already losing power (but I will be by as soon as it clears)

Thursday Two Questions
This is 2 Question Thursday hosted by Self Sagacity
which I'm posting today, just in case you'd like to join.
If you'd like, you can simply answer the question-
Not trying to twist your arm (smile)
OK, I was thinking not why.. but how things are and could begin to get worse. It appears that way, as gas is already up to $4.50 a gal. here. We also had a 24% rate increase from Matson (shipping)..so, we'll feel that spike shortly.

Many of us didn't live through the Great Depression, but I'd imagine they began to figure on what they could do without rather quickly..
maybe it was gradual?
1.) Have you made any serious changes within the last six months? For example, we dropped one land line phone some time ago (one is mostly for business now).

We pulled up to get gas and hadn't realized the former (gas and a convenient store) changed hands..but it was hard not to miss this sign in front-

2.) Do you think people need the government to nudge us into helping one another or do you think we might pull together and figure out how to do
so  on our own (more so now) without their help..maybe?

Wondering out loud questions (cough) (remember- only 2 you need to answer)
if assistance would make it more difficult (either way) and
should church play a bigger role or do you think it will?

We just made one change which I don't like, and that was cancelling the local paper. But we still get another paper, just not two anymore. Well about government helping out. I watched a really good news show on T.V. that talked about a church run program of giving the needy meals. And it was an awesome program and helped a lot of people. But for some reason, they let the government step in and take charge of it, and the government had so many rules for them that the volunteers dwindled and the program became non-effective. Having said all that, I still think government needs to help people. Because everyone passes the buck and hopes that others will do it. and let's face it, if people were left to their own devices, I think there would be many more homeless and hungry. Many people disagree and think that people should give only if they want, but many of those same people are living on Social Security, which the government made them give when they worked.

Great questions and certainly timely that's for sure. We dropped all the extras on our land phone bill, it cut our bill form $70 to $16. My poor hubby just has to get use to using the cell phone. I would like to see everyone helping others even if it is only some small way. I know of one person that is getting a lot of help from their church but a job would really help. I hope you have a great weekend.

1. We are always conservative in our spending, so there are not many things I have cut as yet, except shopping for shopping's sake and buying things I don't really need.
2. I think we have a great influence on many of the problems our country faces via our habits as consumers and our ability to vote. However, our country is currently in too deep of a mess to be able to right itself without government intervention. That said, without statesmen willing to think about the overall good of the country instead of their own political views and the interests of wealthy corporations, we won't see positive change for a long time, if at all.

Hi Regina,

This is quite fascinating questions. It will take time for the economy to improve but the back and forth bickering in politics makes it very discouraging and disheartening for Americans. If we could come together, we could overcome this. I'm just not too sure now. On a happier note, love your photo though :)

I've been cutting back for a long time now. I suspended the cable when we moved out during fire and renovations and haven't restarted it. I've been keeping a tight rein on needless shopping, don't go out for dining too often, watch the food sales, cook and bake from scratch and am about to cut the wireless internet service for my laptop (I'll still have home internet service). I would cut my telephone land line and just use the cell phone but need to keep it in order to be able to talk to mom for long periods of time. Talking on the cell phone for long periods isn't workable plus its just too expensive. As for churches and whether they should help more...the answer is a no brainer. I believe they/we are called to do so but many do not.

No really big changes but we did drop our regular phone company and now our phone is through the internet. When the contract is up we will go to only cell phones.

We shouldn't need anyone to nudge us in to doing the right thing when it comes to helping each other. Giving should start in our own community by contributing both money and time to local programs. Also we need to create more jobs on a local level. If ever community pulled together to help those in need we wouldn't have to rely on all the government programs.

Great questions here.

1. I have basically trimmed all my spending down to necessities. In the past I would go out much more often to concerts, dinners, etc... Now I have to watch every penny and if I do want to spend on entertainment, something else has to give.

2. I think we all do help each other. The government is what got us into this mess and they need to get a clue and do something about it. We are spending trillions of dollars daily on wars and military actions all over the world. If we stopped policing the entire world we - meaning the government would have the money to keep our social programs intact, allow more money for our schools and get people to work. I'll stop now before I really start ranting :D

since our only income is SS, we made our drastic changes in sept of 06 when i retired. no changes lately but since the prices are climbing fast we will be looking at even more cuts soon, we had cut our spending to minimum already. i do not shop at all, only go with a list and buy what we need. no more wandering through candle aisle or things like that.
i am in the middle on govt help, some is always needed but i think they are giving to much and people are starting to depend on it and we all need to stand on our own to feet and help others by ourselves or through the churches. our govt needs a big kick in the seat for the bickering that is going on about the budget.

We haven't made any serious changes within the last six months.

I am totally against Big Government butting into our affairs. We are taxed to death because of social programs some of which I do not agree with. Those who are legitimately in need, then I feel as a nation, we would be more inclined to help. Shoot, we do help when asked, don't we? Just look at the various charities out there.

Hello Regina and welcome to Thursday Two Questions. Your post has very deep thoughts. 1) I am always looking to save and downgrade. I wish I could find ways to save money with gas. The gas prices are getting to ridiculous points. But to answer your first question, I have cut out cable tv- period for 4/5 years now. Instead of paying 60/70 USD a month, we pay for basic just to have reception on the regular channels. We use Netflix, which is only $10 month, and we can view anytime. We use OOMA - you should check it out, and cell phone and no landlines
2) I think we could use some help from the churches to recruit and broadcast to help form groups. I also think that it is good for the government to help form groups to make things flow more smoothly. We all need nudges, since time is not always abundant.

1) This last 6 months I changed the way I shop, buy going to Thrift Stores more often.

2) There are so many people who needs so if anyone can help anyone, that is great..

1. I am trying to save as much as I can, but it's hard, We don't go out as much as we used to to puns or restaurant and instead going to cinema it is film dvd :)
2. I think governments all over the world have problems now and they have to sort themself first, after spending lots of money for years on things that weren't needed ( at least over here ) people trying to think themselves how to live...

Hmmmm.... I do not make much changes recently, except being too busy at work and less blogging.

DoanLegacy said...

1) We didn't make any drastic change this last 6 months.

2) I have to say that individual helping individual is a more effective way. When the government involves, it's usually ended up in a mess, and they are out for themselves.

(About the red peppers, we didn't grow them, I took the photos from the market!)

The husband decided to sell stock and pay off all our cards. We'll see how that story turns out.

Me. I did a secret mission.

I think the government is getting too big for it's own britches and forget what their duties are in the first place.

It's natural for people to be family like and will help each other when it gets down to the nub, but honestly I think inside we are simply selfish and wont give the time now until we realize how much we ourselves need help.
But we will get around to it if we must.

Not to mention how numb society seems to be because of the bombardment of tv on the senses with so many different settings.

i am recently retired, got tired of being an employee for more than 20 years. i am still trying to simplify my life, get rid of the non-essentials. with the current gas prices, i am buying a more practical car (that's what keeps me busy these past few days, sorry for the late visit.:p).

the gov't should take the lead role. although our gov't is not always effective because of corruption and bureaucracy. but people here, with the help of media and NGOs, are pushing for more reforms to alleviate the lives of the poor.

Love the new photo! Yes, we've cut down dramatically. We've also dropped our land-line. I was surprised to see so many have done that! My husband was laid off in 11/08, and I am unable to work any longer. He never did find a job so we both took early retirement, Social Security. We weren't expecting any of that, so we're really hurting, but not nearly as bad as so many. God is good!
~~The churches definitely need to step up. The trouble is so many of them are shut down by the government! There was a local church that served sandwiches in the park where a lot of homeless hung out, and they got in huge trouble. Food gets thrown out in dumpsters and is not allowed to go to homeless shelters. Makes me ill. If we would stop allowing illegals to suck up so much of our assets, that would help tremendously.
Good questions - good answers!
~~~Blessings~~~
